A helpful answer.
A correct outcome.

Which AI customer support platform should you choose? Start with your help desk, channels and the actions an agent must complete. Then test the difficult handoff.

A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

Which tool belongs on your shortlist?

Evaluate Zendesk AI when the service platform and agent workspace are central to the decision. Consider Decagon for AI customer-service workflows, Sierra for a shared agent across channels, and Retell AI for voice-led phone workflows. Verify the exact integration and plan before treating any as a replacement for your existing setup.

02 / CHECK THE FIT

One useful test
for each candidate.

01 / SERVICE PLATFORM

Zendesk AI

AI capabilities alongside knowledge, automation and service-team tools.

The first experiment

Use an answerable request and an exception. Inspect the ticket, resolution and human agent’s context.

Check before buying: Check your edition, existing help desk, knowledge sources and integration scope.

02 / SERVICE-AGENT WORKFLOWS

Decagon

AI agents for customer-service conversations and actions.

The first experiment

Introduce an exception that requires a person. Confirm the handoff preserves the request and attempted actions.

Check before buying: A workflow needs clear action permissions, escalation rules and connected-system checks.

03 / CROSS-CHANNEL SERVICE

Sierra

Agents deployed across channels including chat, email and voice.

The first experiment

Start a fictional issue in chat and continue by voice. Check whether the configured agent retains the relevant facts.

Check before buying: Confirm identity handling, integration availability and how context carries between your selected channels.

04 / PHONE WORKFLOWS

Retell AI

AI voice agents with appointment, transfer and monitoring capabilities.

The first experiment

Correct a booking time mid-call. Inspect the final record and test an explicit request for a human.

Check before buying: Check telephone setup, latency, interruption handling and the system of record.

ILLUSTRATIVE DECISION / NOT A CUSTOMER RESULT

A support team handling appointment changes

Use a fictional booking. Ask for a change, correct the time, then request a person. Inspect the final appointment and the context passed to the human agent. A fluent conversation that changes the wrong record fails this task. Run the same scenario with each shortlisted configuration before comparing costs.

03 / COUNT THE WHOLE COST

What will it take
to keep it useful?

Request a quote for the same expected workload. Include platform fees, seats, agent usage or outcomes, telephony, integrations, implementation, human escalations and ongoing QA. Define what counts as a billable outcome and what happens when a conversation is reopened. Vendor pricing models are not directly interchangeable.

01

Subscription & usage

Get current plan terms for your workload.

02

Setup & review

Count integration, editing and exception handling.

03

Ownership & exit

Check exports, permissions and who maintains it.

No numeric vendor prices are quoted here. Ask for current billing terms and feature limits for your intended use before purchasing.

04 / MAKE A DECISION YOU CAN EXPLAIN

A fair first trial.

  1. Write the outcome. Choose one task, fixed inputs and a checkable result. Record your current method first.
  2. Keep conditions comparable. Note the plan, configuration, source material and integrations. Separate unavailable features from poor results.
  3. Record the whole task. Capture setup, run time, correction, errors and final quality. Keep failed runs in your notes.
  4. Choose the next step. Keep, investigate further or skip. A small trial supports a local decision, not a universal claim.
SOURCES & METHOD

How this shortlist was made.

These candidates connect to existing Useful in Practice coverage and represent different workflows. The selection is editorial, not exhaustive. Vendor sources establish advertised capabilities; the fit judgments and trial ideas are Stephen’s analysis. No comparative account-based benchmark was run for this guide.

Product information was checked October 26, 2026. Older Field Notes retain their own evidence dates. Confirm plan availability, integrations and current terms with the vendor. No paid placement or affiliate link was added to this guide.

Editorial standards and corrections · About the publication

How should I compare AI customer support agents?

Hold the task, source knowledge and expected result constant. Test a normal request, a correction, an unsupported request and a human handoff. Score the final record and handoff completeness separately from how natural the answer sounds. A small pilot finds failure modes; it does not prove a universal winner.
