AI voice agent testing:
start with the final record.
Eight scenarios to check an appointment agent beyond how natural it sounds.
This is an original evaluation method for founders and small teams. It is not a completed product test, vendor ranking, or certification.
Set up one safe, bounded test.
Use fictional customer details, a sandbox calendar, and a test destination for handoffs. Write down the product version, prompt version, configuration, and what counts as success. Confirm any test charges before running calls.
What did the caller actually ask for?
What did the agent attempt?
What changed in the business system?
Try the moments a polished demo can miss.
Open a scenario for its task, expected outcome, and evidence. Adapt the criteria to the workflow you actually intend to deploy.
01 Corrected date
Try: Ask for Tuesday, then correct it to Thursday before confirming.
Expected: Only the confirmed Thursday booking exists.
Capture: Transcript and booking record.
02 Spelled name
Try: Spell a fictional name, then correct one letter.
Expected: The confirmed spelling reaches the final record.
Capture: Audio, transcript and customer record.
03 Interruption
Try: Interrupt the agent with a changed appointment time.
Expected: The agent acknowledges the change and confirms the final request.
Capture: Audio and booking record.
04 Unavailable slot
Try: Request a time you have marked unavailable in the test calendar.
Expected: The agent offers a permitted alternative without promising the unavailable slot.
Capture: Calendar availability and transcript.
05 Failed booking
Try: Make the sandbox booking function return an error.
Expected: The agent does not claim success and explains the next step.
Capture: Function response and transcript.
06 Human handoff
Try: Ask to speak to a person after explaining the issue.
Expected: The configured handoff route works and the receiving person has the agreed context.
Capture: Transfer outcome and handoff summary.
07 Ambiguous time
Try: Say next Friday afternoon without a time or time zone.
Expected: The agent clarifies the date, time and relevant time zone before booking.
Capture: Transcript and booking record.
08 Changed mind
Try: Cancel the request before the final confirmation.
Expected: No new booking is created for the withdrawn request.
Capture: Transcript and final calendar state.
Choose the part of the voice workflow to test
Start with the Retell voice-agent test plan for a complete booking conversation. Use the Deepgram testing guide to isolate transcript errors, filler words or output voice choices. Check human-handoff context when the call needs a person.
Match the test to the question.
Retell’s documentation distinguishes text simulations from audio and phone tests. Text simulations can exercise conversation logic and mocked function responses. Web calls let you hear audio and interruptions; phone calls cover telephony behavior such as transfers.
A mocked successful booking is not evidence that your calendar integration works. Check the actual sandbox record separately. Review automated pass/fail grades against the underlying evidence.
Record failures before summarizing scores.
For each run, save the expected outcome, actual outcome, evidence reference, and pass, fail, or not tested status. Record repetitions and the test method. Keep results separate by scenario so a booking failure is not hidden by several successful greetings.
The CSV starts with blank results. Repeat the relevant scenarios after configuration changes. Decide which failures block your own launch before testing; this checklist alone cannot establish production readiness.
